A revolting example of the Anglo-Saxon Jobsworth at his most officious: from Chortle (which seems to be the trade rag of the stand-up comedy industry), via A Very British Dude and Cruella Blog.
Stand-up Tom Wrigglesworth was threatened with arrest – after coming to the aid of an elderly train passenger who had been reduced to tears by Virgin Train staff… The comic stepped in after he saw 75-year-old Lena Ainscow sobbing after she was forced to pay £115 for getting on the wrong train… He organised a whip-round among fellow passengers to cover the fare, but the officious train manager said his actions amounted to begging – and called police. He ordered 32-year-old Wrigglesworth to hand back the cash or face being arrested…. So the comic was met at Euston by transport police… When the police learned what had happened they walked away… Virgin Trains today apologised…
Apologised.
I think that this so-called ‘train manager’ should be publicly sacked. Not even absolute dedication to the greater glory of his employer’s profit would justify this outrageous act of common bullying. They would have got their money, but that wasn’t good enough for him. He wanted to demonstrate his power. He was prepared to be hated, as long as he was feared. He wouldn’t stand for any lip from some comedian. He wanted ‘respect’, and was quite happy to waste the time of the transport police in demanding it.
Shabby, anonymous, self-righteous, I’m-only-doing-my-job petty tyrants like this have since time immemorial been the curse of the United Kingdom and are now the main reason for its galloping totalitarianism and a major component of our once proud country’s international disgrace. If there is any purpose in ‘genetic engineering’, it is probably to identify the elements of DNA which cause certain people to turn into little Hitlers instantly upon being put into any kind of uniform or given any kind of authority, howsoever petty, and to develop some kind of genetic vaccine against its happening in the future.
We all know the achievements throughout history of people ‘only doing their job’. No industrial crematoria, widespread areas of mass graves or mysteriously missing sections of the population are complete without them.
I am sick of hearing the ‘Nuremburg defence’ from loathsome little bullies, and bland, costs-nothing ‘apologies’ from their employers. Why anyone should ever consider travelling on Virgin Trains after having read about this defeats me entirely.

Sacked! I’d have him lashed to the front of the next Intercity to leave Euston. Next stop – Liverpool…
Yes, but he’d still be on the train…
