ITN reports yet another devious, shameful and globally humiliating measure on the part of the government to exclude from residency in the UK members of the Brigade of Ghurkas.
There is such a marked discrepancy between the government’s treatment of these fine soldiers and its treatment of those very much less deserving of residence here that [...]

Haw haw! Sheee-it!

I’m going to hell (holy: tick) for this, for sure.
This, from An Englishman’s Castle, made me laugh. Not once, but several times. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa (tick).
Ayo Ghurkhali!

[Ghurkali: 'Here come the Ghurkas']
Mr. Eugenides found this in the Times:
Thousands more Gurkha soldiers and their families will be given the right to settle in Britain under a new policy to be announced by the Home Office.
Damn right!
Why on earth this country should make it so difficult for people to live here who have [...]

Why am I unsurprised at the fuss being made about Prince Harry’s language?
Because decades ago, during the Cold War, there were huge military exercises all over places like West Germany*. In these exercises, the Army (and its NATO rivals) practiced being given a through shoeing by a couple of dozen Soviet armoured divisions while still [...]

I stand informed by Tim Worstall, but not corrected.
This is because I did not work on the assumption that the Kent News story about the late Colour-Sergeant Dura and his family was necessarily true in every detail, but merely attempted to answer the question posed by two other bloggers in almost identical terms: [...]
Disgusting treatment of Ghurkas: again
Posted in Army, tagged ghurkas on 12 December, 2008 | 3 Comments »
A story from Kent News, referred to by The lone voice (and Obnoxio, and Ian Parker-Joseph, and Tom Paine, and probably every other decent blogger in the world).
Both TLV and Obnoxio ask why the Labour Party so hates Ghurkas.
Could it be because they’re now rather more British than we are ourselves? Their virtues and [...]

Good article on sniping in The Register, containing only one obvious mistake (the R in 7.62×54R meaning ‘rimmed’ as in ‘rimmed centrefire’, the only ‘rimfire’ round in common use being the .22LR).
I entirely approve of sniping and, despite being now somewhat stout for the prone position (never mind Hawkins’), still look forward to the day [...]

…the only thing that unites us is Doctor Martin’s Boots.”
[Sayle]
Not actually Dr. Martin’s boots on this occasion, but evidently very well-made replicas of those issued during the First World War. As recommended by An Englishman.
He says:
Who needs fancy plastics and Gortex when proper bootmakers are still at their last?
Hmm.
My personal belief is that military equipment [...]

More from The Independent: this, about how fat people have got something wrong with their brains, which can be fixed:
“The findings suggest certain biological factors may impact one’s risk for weight gain, which is important to better understand how we can intervene and prevent obesity.”
And this, which is about the memory-erasure technique which I mentioned [...]

In among the usual subliminal prolefeed pouring from the Minitrue orifice over the last few days was a nasty little piece on Radio 4, in which some member of the self-styled ‘Great and Good’ was explaining in the usual patronising manner why it is that anyone who leaves the Army and doesn’t go straight into [...]
